Are you counting down the days to Turkey Season in your respective state? Whether you are counting or not, Turkey Season is upon us! For some, this will be your first turkey hunt. For others, this is just another kick-off to the Spring Season. For the new hunters in the gang, fear not, here are some quick tips to give you some knowledge to best prep for a successful season:
Patience Is Key - You will learn a lot in your first few hunts if you are attentive. Like any hunt worth doing, patience is a virtue.
Sit Still - Whether you are exposed in the open or in a blind (recommended), Turkeys have an incredible sense of movement through their world class vision for the slightest of movements.
Stay Quiet - Turkeys have an incredible ability to hear and pinpoint where the noise is coming from. Don't let noise undo a successful hunt.
Tips on Calling Hens & Toms - Learn to call Hens. Toms will follow them in. Whether you are calling in Toms or Hens, once they are closing in on your location, do not keep calling. Remain still and quiet and prepare for your shot.
Learn To Scout Properly - This is going to be key for where you decide to set-up. Once you have a beat on where they are roosting & feeding, you'll have a better idea of where to set-up to make the most of your season.
Use Decoys - For the purpose of diverting the turkeys attention from you and also creating curiosity to draw the turkeys in, get yourself a dependable, durable decoy.
Don't Worry As Much About Scent (Compared to hunting Deer) - Turkeys aren't scent assassins like deer can be. Instead of obsessing about scent, you should control your attire by avoiding loud colors (i.e. Hunters Orange). Keep it Camo or colors that blend in with your environment. Turkeys have outstanding vision, don't give them an advantage.
Are their any other Pro-Tips that should be added to this list? If so, we would love to hear from you.
